With nearly 40 years of experience, Marshall Leonard is familiar with a great many facets of the heavy civil construction business. In all that time, he has carried with him an adage handed down to him by his father: “a job worth doing is worth doing right!” He maintains the same careful precision throughout all his work at G.W. Tatro Construction – whether it be bidding on a multi-million dollar project or supervising a local driveway repair. On top of his duties as general manager, Marshall continues to be an estimator and project supervisor.

Marshall graduated from Wentworth Institute of Technology with an Associate’s Degree in Civil and Highway Engineering. Marshall worked surveying and as a resident engineer for four years. He then went on to pursue a Bachelor‘s Degree in Civil Engineering at the University of Vermont. He received his registration as a Professional Engineer in 1989. Marshall was recruited to work for G.W. Tatro upon graduating from UVM in 1982. For twenty years he worked as lead estimator and a project supervisor. “It was really small at first,” Marshall recalls of his early days at the company. His first job was at Blush Hill in Waterbury, where he completed small-scale road repairs. Marshall helped to push the company to take on more and more ambitious projects. Evocative of this vision was the construction of a wastewater treatment plant for the Sunday River Ski Resort. It was also one of the most challenging projects he ever supervised. “It was a tight schedule,” he recollects. “And we had to be on-line before Christmas. As part of our contract we had to guarantee completion or pump and haul all of the sewer for the resort!” After a three-year break working as a project supervisor with a Burlington construction firm, Marshall returned to G.W. Tatro as the company’s General Manager. He has played a vital role in the company’s expansion and successes since then.

Marshall’s philosophy is to always strive to do the highest quality job. In working with and building relationships with clients, he has always believed that G.W. Tatro Construction is “in it for the long haul” in helping to realize their clients’ goals and ideas. To this day, he still lives by his father’s words of wisdom, and it is this vision that helps to keep the company’s clients coming back again and again.

Marshall’s other passions in life cover a wide array of interests. He does some woodworking in his free time, and loves to camp in summer and hunt in the fall. Above all, he enjoys spending time with his children and grandchildren.
