The belle of the ball, the cat’s meow. Call it what you want: this 2017 Western Star is top of the line.  Acquired as a part of the Clean Diesel Grant, this truck’s driver, Danny Loucks, spent hours helping to build the specs—from the transmission to the leather steering wheel (which he says is “easy on the hands).

It’s got a big engine, a heavy drive line and frame. Its air suspension is ‘extreme duty,’ meaning that has, as Justin Day explains it, “an amazingly smooth drive.” The frame is a little longer than most of our dump trucks, which helps to keep the center of gravity low. The 4:10 gears really take it to the next level.

Other features include what Danny calls “a real strong running motor” in the DD16, as well as an 18-speed transmission. There are tons of gauges on the dash board that measure everything from axle temperatures to how hot the oil is. It also has dual stainless-steel air breathers, power windows, heated leather seats, and a drop visor over the windshield. Danny’s favorite thing about the Western Star, however, is how quiet it is. It’s a huge improvement over his previous experiences in other trucks of the past.

Another great feature is how cleanly this truck burns. Gone is the smoky exhaust of the average dump truck, since this has with exhaust scrubbers to screen out dirty air, leaving the air emitted to be far cleaner.

That means the truck engine is very efficient with how they inject and burn diesel fuel, making every drop count. They handle emissions with a selective catalytic reduction(SCR) process where diesel exhaust fluid(DEF) is injected into the engine’s exhaust streams which causes harmful nitrogen oxides to become a safe inert nitrogen. The SCR process coupled with particulate filters and its exhaust gas recirculation system makes for extremely clean emissions. Most trucks have a black and sooty exhaust pipe, but not these. You can run your finger around the stack and it will still be clean! We are proud to do our part to keep emissions as low as possible.
